Modular EV charge controller combines hardware and open-source charging software

By Michelle Froese | October 7, 2026

Pionix, AST-X, and Solectrix have partnered on a customizable charge controller for electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. The platform combines a pre-validated controller design with the open-source EVerest charging software stack.

The controller is based on Pionix’s ChargeBridge reference design and can be adapted to different charger designs and interface requirements.

Manufacturers can begin development using existing evaluation hardware before moving to a customized prototype.

Charging logic, computing, and system interfaces can be integrated on a single PCB. This reduces internal wiring and the number of connection points inside the charger.

The software-defined architecture also allows new charging functions and standards to be introduced through over-the-air updates instead of requiring a redesigned controller.

Pionix provides the EVerest software stack and reference design. AST-X handles hardware and PCB development through qualification and manufacturing, while Solectrix provides embedded Linux development and system integration.

The modular approach is intended to give EV charger manufacturers a common controller platform that can be adapted to different hardware and charging-system requirements.
