Enphase Energy has confirmed that its IQ EV Charger 2 supports the ISO 15118-20 communication standard for electric vehicle (EV) charging.
The protocol is required under the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), with new requirements taking effect January 1, 2027.
ISO 15118-20 defines communication between an EV and charging equipment, supporting secure data exchange and automated charging authentication. The standard also provides a framework for bidirectional power transfer, although this capability depends on compatibility with the vehicle and the surrounding charging system.
According to Enphase, the IQ EV Charger 2 has supported ISO 15118-20 since its initial release. Existing installations require no hardware changes to support the protocol, and the company plans to expand vehicle compatibility through over-the-air firmware updates.
The communication standard enables functions such as Plug & Charge, allowing compatible vehicles to authenticate and initiate charging without requiring a separate user authorization step.
For charging equipment developers, support for ISO 15118-20 establishes a communication framework for future interoperability with compatible EVs. However, protocol support alone does not establish that a charger can currently return electricity from a vehicle to a building or the grid.
Enphase has made a self-declaration of compliance available in the documentation for its IQ EV Charger 2, including information on ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 protocol support and testing.
