Compact safety capacitors provide EMI filtering for EV chargers

By Michelle Froese | October 22, 2026

TDK has introduced the B3201*A5/B5/C5 series of Y1 safety capacitors designed to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) in electric vehicle (EV) power electronics.

The components are intended for use in onboard chargers and EV charging infrastructure, where electrical noise must be controlled in high-voltage power conversion circuits.

The metallized polypropylene (MKP) film capacitors are rated for continuous operation at 500 Vac or up to 1,500 Vdc at temperatures up to 110° C. Operation at temperatures up to 125° C is supported with voltage derating of 1.5% per degree Celsius above 110° C, for a maximum of 1,000 hours.

The series provides capacitance values from 0.47 to 33 nF, with lead spacings of 15 or 22.5 mm. The smaller B32012 variants have minimum dimensions of 5.0 × 10.5 × 18.0 mm, allowing engineers to incorporate line-to-ground EMI filtering into space-constrained printed circuit board (PCB) layouts.

The capacitors comply with AEC-Q200 Rev. E automotive qualification requirements and use a self-healing film construction. They have also undergone temperature-humidity-bias testing at 85° C and 85% relative humidity under 500 Vac for 500 hours. The series meets IEC/EN/UL 60384-14 safety requirements and features UL 94 V-0-rated housing materials for applications requiring electrical insulation and resistance to elevated temperatures.
