Advancing EVs and electrification through rare earth and copper recycling

By Michelle Froese | December 12, 2024

Cyclic Materials, an advanced metals recycling company building a circular supply chain for rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical metals, has entered into a multi-year offtake agreement with Glencore, a global natural resources company, to supply copper extracted from recycled electronic scrap.

This partnership aims to promote circularity in the rare earth elements (REEs) and critical metals supply chain while addressing the rising demand for materials essential to the energy transition — particularly in electrification technologies like electric vehicles (EVs).

Copper, valued for its natural conductivity, is a key material in many EV and energy transition technologies.

Under the agreement, Cyclic Materials will supply high-quality recycled copper, which Glencore will further process at the Horne Smelter and Canadian Copper Refinery into copper cathode for use in new end-products. This collaboration supports sustainable practices by reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, and ensuring a reliable supply chain for critical materials.

Cyclic Materials contributes to building a more resilient and circular economy for materials vital to electrification and the broader energy transition by recovering valuable metals from sources like EV motors and electronic waste.
