Lumafield has introduced Saturn, a large-format industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner designed to inspect dense components and complex assemblies without destructive testing.
The system is intended for applications including large battery packs and other automotive components where engineers need internal quality data before parts are cut apart.
Saturn supports helical scans of parts up to 580 mm in diameter and 1,100 mm high. Its 225-kV X-ray source can penetrate up to 100 mm of light metals, including aluminum and magnesium, giving engineers a way to inspect internal structures in larger automotive assemblies.
The scanner generates 3D data that can be used to evaluate internal defects and dimensional characteristics without disassembly. This can help engineering teams examine battery assemblies and other electric vehicle (EV) hardware during design validation, supplier qualification, and production inspection.
Saturn integrates with Lumafield’s Voyager analysis software for reconstruction and automated defect detection. Dimensional analysis can also be used to compare internal features against design requirements.
The system is designed to support first article inspection and Production Part Approval Process workflows by bringing volumetric inspection in-house rather than relying on sectioning or outsourced scanning.
Lumafield says Saturn is intended to extend industrial CT inspection to components that were previously too large or dense for its existing systems.
