Turntide Technologies has secured funding for an 18-month project aimed at expanding production of its axial-flux electric motors through increased automation and manufacturing development.
The £17 million Project SUPREME will focus on production steps including winding, component tooling, and product validation for volume manufacture. The company says the work is intended to reduce production costs and address manufacturing barriers that have limited wider adoption of axial-flux motor technology.
Compared with conventional radial-flux motors, axial-flux designs can deliver higher power density in a smaller and lighter package. These characteristics make them attractive for electric powertrain applications where packaging space and weight are key design considerations.
The manufacturing expansion is based in the UK, but the technology also has relevance for North American electric vehicle (EV) programs. Turntide operates in North America and supplies electric motor, power electronics, and energy-storage technologies for electrified vehicle applications.
Turntide plans to expand production and R&D activity at its Gateshead facility and reestablish a dedicated component and validation facility in Cramlington, Northumberland.
