EFI Automotive developing hands-free automatic EV charging solution

By Michelle Froese | April 15, 2024

EFI Automotive, a tier 1 automotive supplier, is developing a hands-free conductive automatic charging solution for electric vehicles (EVs), in partnership with GULPLUG.

EFI Automotive’s induction robot charger for EVs. The company is continuing to invest in hands-free EV charging solutions.

EFI Automotive has already presented one of its automatic induction charging solutions (with robot positioning) with its project project, Stellantis. This collaboration with the automaker also earned EFI Automotive the “2023 Supplier of the Year” award in the innovation category, as part of the the Stellantis Group 2023 Global Awards.

For EFI Automotive, inductive and conductive technologies are complementary in addressing all automatic charging needs.

The new hands-free charging is intended for home applications (automatic charging during the night), businesses (automatic charging during work hours), or captive fleets.

This solution provides comfort to the user as no cable manipulation is required. It also helps improve battery life and will facilitate the adoption of bidirectional charging systems. This will allow the car to be used as a mobile energy source when needed, thus contributing to energy management and the resilience of the power grid.

EFI specialized in the design and manufacture of embedded electronic sensors, multi-sensor modules, mechatronic actuators, and power modules with embedded software. These innovative products help make vehicles more fuel-efficient, intelligent, comfortable, and safe, while meeting the demanding standards of safety and cybersecurity (ISO26262 and TISAX).

The company has a strong international presence, with technological development centers, production facilities, and commercial offices in the United States (2 sites), Brazil (1 site), Europe (4 sites in France, 1 site in Germany, 1 site in Turkey), and Asia (3 sites in China). It has implemented an innovation strategy to meet the challenges of mobility. This strategy is carried out not only through its R&D department but also through Axandus (its industrial start-up accelerator) and Akeoplus, an actor in Industry 4.0 (an industrial engineering company specializing in the design and implementation of digital solutions to improve production processes, products, and customer services).
