As electrification expands across New York City, Revel has implemented grid-responsive charging capabilities at its new Superhub located at the Dime Building in Williamsburg.
By dynamically shifting charging loads, Revel helps alleviate stress on the electric grid during high-demand periods, typically when electricity is most carbon-intensive and costly. The company’s SmartKit Demand Response technology, developed by Logical Buildings, also qualifies for utility Demand Response incentives.
The integration of virtual power plant (VPP) software into EV charging infrastructure reflects a growing need for grid-interactive electrification. As New York pursues carbon-free electricity under its climate goals, technologies that enable flexible demand (particularly during heatwaves or other stress events) play a key role in reducing the use of fossil fuel-powered peaker plants, which emit disproportionately high levels of CO₂ and NOₓ.
Revel’s system was tested during the launch of the 2025 Demand Response season from June 23- 25, when three consecutive curtailment events were triggered due to extreme heat. Temperatures reached triple digits on June 24, and utility forecasts showed system demand exceeding 100% of historical peak capacity.
In response, Revel curtailed up to 250 kilowatts of load at its Williamsburg site, which houses 15 public fast-charging stalls. This targeted reduction is expected to deliver avoided emissions and grid relief while generating revenue through grid services programs.
“By using SmartKit, Revel is turning electric load into flexible, responsive capacity, a replicable model for cities looking to decarbonize while electrifying,” said David Klatt, president of Logical Buildings.
Revel’s collaboration with Logical Buildings began in 2021 with its moped fleet and has since evolved into a broader strategy for grid-optimized EV infrastructure. With the Williamsburg Superhub now active and integrated into New York’s Demand Response programs, the project offers a real-world example of how EV infrastructure can support both mobility and grid reliability.
