Using AI technology for customizable EV battery assembly

By Michelle Froese | May 7, 2024

Cognex Corporation, a provider of machine vision for factory and warehouse automation, announced that more customers are experiencing increased productivity and efficiency thanks to Cognex machine vision solutions using AI to tackle tasks that until recently could only be done by a human.

“We’re thrilled to hear from customers that are broadening adoption of machine vision thanks to AI making it easier than ever,” said Lavanya Manohar, senior VP, of products at Cognex. “Innovations like our AI-powered In-Sight SnAPP are empowering smaller customers that until now haven’t had the right tools to take advantage of machine vision, and helping larger customers accelerate enterprise-scale automation projects.”

The In-Sight SnAPP vision sensor allows manufacturers to quickly automate processes and quality control tasks, with no experience needed. Using pre-trained AI, these easy-to-use sensors solve a range of error-proofing applications to ensure peak machine performance, support predictive maintenance, and enable continuous improvement.

One customer that shared significant success with Cognex is Schneider Electric, which incorporated Cognex machine vision systems into factories around the world as part of a strategic “smart factories” digital transformation initiative.

Additionally, Ansomat, a maker of assembly guidance tools, used the Cognex In-Sight 3800 vision system to help customers producing electric vehicle (EV) batteries to provide critical information to workers. The companies goals are results are as follows:

Objectives:
  • Reduce time-to-market and solution complexity for end-users
  • Increase end-user operator skillsets to address variable, complex tasks
  • Develop more scalable, customizable EV battery assembly guidance solutions
Results:
  • Reduced training time for end-users from three months to one week
  • Decreased EV battery-related claims from one customer by 90%
  • Lower scrap rates through reduced operator errors at end-user facilities
