These silicon-anode batteries achieve 900+ cycle efficiency

By Michelle Froese | March 6, 2025

HPQ Silicon, a technology company specializing in sustainable silica and silicon-based materials, announces exceptional battery performance results from its France-based partner, NOVACIUM SAS. Recent testing of 18650 lithium-ion batteries using GEN3 silicon-anode materials demonstrates significantly higher capacity, extended cycle life, and greater energy efficiency than conventional graphite-based batteries.

At 900 cycles, GEN3 batteries retain over 80% of their initial capacity, delivering 30% more cumulative energy than standard graphite anodes. These results suggest that GEN3 silicon-anode materials could be a scalable solution for next-generation electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage batteries, offering a drop-in upgrade for existing battery manufacturing processes.

Testing confirms that Novacium’s GEN3 silicon-based anodes provide:

  • Higher capacity retention – Still delivering over 3,100 mAh after 900 cycles, compared to graphite-based cells that degrade faster.
  • Increased cumulative energy – Producing 30% more total energy output than high-grade artificial graphite anodes.
  • Exceptional Coulombic efficiency – Achieving 99.88% efficiency, minimizing energy loss over time.
  • Longer cycle life – Retaining 82% of initial capacity at 900 cycles, outperforming leading commercial 18650 batteries.

HPQ-Novacium’s GEN3 silicon-anode materials are designed for seamless integration into existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing, including 18650, 21700, 26650, and 4680 cells, widely used in EVs.

Unlike traditional silicon anodes, which often degrade rapidly, GEN3’s stabilized silicon formulation enhances performance while remaining compatible with current battery production lines.

Market potential

Today, 95% of lithium-ion battery anodes are made from graphite, but silicon’s higher energy density and longer lifespan offer a competitive advantage. HPQ-Novacium’s GEN3 silicon materials can replace more than 10% of graphite in battery anodes without requiring costly retooling, making them an attractive solution for battery manufacturers.

According to Benchmark Minerals Intelligence, the global graphite anode market is projected to grow from 700,000 tonnes in 2021 to 4.5 million tonnes by 2030, creating an addressable market of 450,000 to 675,000 tonnes for silicon-based materials — valued between $22.5 billion and $33.8 billion.
