Syrah Resources is commencing production of active anode material (AAM) production at its Vidalia plant in Louisiana.
The AAM Vidalia facility, with an annual production capacity of 11.25ktpa, is strategic for Syrah and the battery supply chain in North America. This development positions Syrah as the first commercial-scale, vertically integrated natural graphite AAM supplier outside China.
“This strategy is supported by strong EV-driven demand globally, recognition of the importance of independent natural graphite AAM critical mineral supply, and differentiation in terms of emissions intensity of production and provenance of supply,” said Verner. “The importance of Vidalia is reinforced by China’s recent introduction of export controls on natural and synthetic graphite, its products, and US guidance on the definition of foreign entity of concern governing qualification for the Section 30D tax credit for new electric vehicles.”
The commissioning and production activities at the Vidalia facility have been a multi-month process, with Syrah’s operations team involved as each plant area was prepared for handover. In January of this year, the company achieved a critical milestone by producing its first batch of purified spherical graphite.
