Supply agreement fuels plans for new high-capacity battery factory in the US

By Michelle Froese | July 31, 2024

CustomCells is planning to develop a factory in the United States with a capacity of up to 2 GWh, underlining their North American growth plans. This is thanks to a new multi-year supply agreement between the German battery pioneer, CustomCells, and Group14 Technologies, currently the world’s largest global manufacturer and supplier of advanced silicon battery material.

This supply agreement between Group14 and CustomCells is expected to exceed US$300M of contract value to secure a substantial supply of SCC55 beyond 2030, ensuring CustomCells’ long-term capability to meet the demand for their high-performance battery cells. CustomCells will be able to procure SCC55, which is Group14’s advanced silicon battery material.

Group14 and CustomCells have been working together since 2020. “We have proven the potential of Group14’s SCC55 and have also made high-performance prototype cells available to our customers, which have been very well received,” said Abendroth.

The collaboration has led to valuable insights, according to the companies, particularly concerning processing in the extruder. In the future, the main aim is to strengthen technical dialogue, as well as the future process technology and cell chemistry. CustomCells has been integrating high silicon content into its 4695 cylindrical cells, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
