Smart metering expands dynamic load balancing for EV charging

By Michelle Froese | September 4, 2026

Enphase Energy has expanded metering compatibility for its IQ EV Charger 2 across several European markets, allowing the charger to use household energy data for dynamic load balancing and solar-based charging.

The expanded compatibility allows the charger to operate as a standalone system, alongside an existing third-party solar installation, or as part of an Enphase home energy system.

Dynamic load balancing adjusts EV charging power as electricity demand elsewhere in the home changes. This helps keep the combined electrical load within the available capacity of the home’s electrical service while allowing charging power to increase when additional capacity becomes available.

The charger can also use metering data to direct available surplus solar generation to the EV. The functionality can operate with compatible third-party solar systems as well as Enphase installations.

Metering integrations include Linky meters in France through the TIC interface, P1/DSMR connections in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and HAN connections in Norway. Compatible current-transformer-based metering solutions can be used in other markets.

The expanded metering options allow installers to add load management and solar charging without requiring an Enphase solar or battery system, broadening the range of electrical configurations in which the charger can be deployed
