Scaling rare-earth-free magnet manufacturing in Minnesota

By Michelle Froese | November 5, 2025

Niron Magnetics, a manufacturer of high-performance Iron Nitride permanent magnets made without rare earth elements, announced an expanded partnership with the City of Sartell to build its first full-scale production facility.

The project supports growing demand for sustainable, domestically produced magnets used in electric vehicle (EV) motors, renewable energy systems, and industrial applications.

Permanent magnets are critical components in electric vehicle drivetrains, where they enable high efficiency and compact motor design.

Niron’s Iron Nitride technology eliminates dependence on imported rare earth materials, helping strengthen US supply chain resilience and reduce the environmental footprint of EV production.

The Sartell site, selected from more than 75 potential locations, will host a 190,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in its first phase, creating 175 full-time jobs. Additional phases are planned as operations scale. The partnership also includes workforce development, educational initiatives, and community engagement to build a skilled talent pipeline for advanced manufacturing.

Supported by the Minnesota Forward Fund, the Sartell facility marks a major step in scaling domestic magnet production and reflects state-level investment in sustainable materials and clean energy innovation.

The project gives new purpose to the former Verso Paper Mill site while positioning Sartell as a hub for advanced manufacturing and next-generation EV technology.
