Battery management systems (BMS) require highly complex control units with multiple components to handle charging, discharging, and continuous monitoring of battery cells. As system designs evolve, the demand for miniaturization has increased significantly, particularly in electric vehicles, where compact electronics directly support reduced weight and extended range.
ept USA, a subsidiary of ept GmbH, a global manufacturer of electronic connectors, offers the Zero8 connector to address this challenge.
The design enables space-efficient board-to-board connections, with a stack height of just 6mm and a pitch of 0.8mm, allowing engineers to save valuable PCB space while maintaining reliable electrical performance.
The Zero8 connector supports data rates up to 16 Gbps, accommodates 12 to 80 contacts, carries up to 1.7 A per contact, and withstands up to 500 mating cycles. Versions are available for parallel and right-angled board-to-board connections, with spacing options between 6 and 21mm.
At the core of the design is ScaleX contact technology, which provides double-sided, vibration-resistant contacting. The scalable architecture gives engineers flexibility in contact count, spacing, and orientation, with optional EMC shielding where required.
The connector is particularly suited for EV battery management systems, inverters, and power electronics, where space optimization, high signal integrity, and mechanical reliability are critical. It’s also applicable in other demanding automotive and industrial environments.
