Samsung SDI and KGM to jointly develop cylindrical battery packs for EVs

By Michelle Froese | January 15, 2026

Samsung SDI announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korean automaker KG Mobility (KGM) to jointly develop advanced battery pack technologies for electric vehicles (EVs).

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on battery systems using high-capacity, high-nickel NCA cathodes and silicon–carbon nanocomposite anodes, with the goal of reducing cell swelling and extending battery lifespan.

The battery design also incorporates a tabless architecture to lower internal resistance and improve current flow, supporting higher power output and improved fast-charging performance.

The collaboration further includes enhancements in thermal management and manufacturing processes aimed at improving safety and quality reliability at the pack level. SAMSUNG SDI’s 46-series cylindrical batteries are designed to support higher energy density and power output through larger-format cells, reduced internal resistance, and improved thermal characteristics, enabling application in EV platforms requiring extended range and fast-charging capability.

Through this partnership, the companies expect the joint development effort to support future EV battery applications and contribute to the continued expansion of cylindrical battery adoption.
