Renesas Electronics Corporation is expanding its software-defined vehicle (SDV) solution portfolio around the fifth-generation (Gen 5) R-Car family, targeting centralized compute architectures used in modern electric and software-defined vehicles.
The latest device in the Gen 5 lineup, the R-Car X5H, is a multi-domain automotive system-on-chip (SoC) manufactured using a 3 nm process. It’s designed to run advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and gateway functions concurrently on a single compute platform.
Renesas has begun sampling Gen 5 silicon and is providing evaluation boards alongside the R-Car Open Access (RoX) Whitebox Software Development Kit (SDK). These tools are intended to support early software integration and system validation as OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers transition toward centralized E/E architectures.
The R-Car X5H is designed to address the compute density and power-efficiency requirements of SDVs, particularly in electric vehicles (EVs) where centralized processing must operate within defined energy and thermal budgets. Compared with prior 5 nm implementations, the SoC is specified to reduce power consumption by up to 35% while increasing integration across domains.
The architecture supports scalable AI acceleration through optional chiplet extensions, delivering up to 400 TOPS of AI performance, with additional acceleration available through chiplets. Graphics performance is rated at 4 TFLOPS equivalent, and the device integrates 32 Arm Cortex-A720AE CPU cores alongside six Cortex-R52 lockstep cores supporting ASIL D safety requirements. Mixed-criticality execution allows workloads with different safety levels to operate on the same device.
To support software-defined development workflows, Renesas has added new capabilities to the RoX development platform. RoX combines hardware, operating systems, middleware, and tooling to support early software bring-up and continuous software updates across the vehicle lifecycle.
RoX Whitebox SDK for Multi-Domain SDV Development
The RoX Whitebox SDK for R-Car X5H is built on Linux, Android, and the XEN hypervisor, with additional support available for AUTOSAR, QNX, Red Hat, SafeRTOS, EB corbos Linux, and partner operating systems.
The SDK is intended to support development of ADAS, higher-level automation, digital cockpit, and gateway functions on a shared compute platform. Integrated AI and ADAS software stacks support perception and sensor fusion workloads, while generative AI and large language model frameworks are included for human-machine interface development.
Additionally, the SDK integrates application software from ecosystem partners, supporting end-to-end development of multi-domain automotive software architectures.
Renesas plans to demonstrate the R-Car X5H at CES 2026 through invitation-only sessions. The demonstrations will show a multi-domain configuration running ADAS, IVI, real-time operating systems, and edge AI workloads across Linux and Android environments using virtualization. The platform supports input from up to eight high-resolution cameras and output to multiple displays, targeting centralized SDV deployments across multiple vehicle domains.
