Portable Level 3 generator supports off-grid and roadside EV charging

By Michelle Froese | September 2, 2025

Polar Power, a provider of dc power solutions, offers unique dc chargers designed to deliver fast, reliable charging for electric vehicles (EVs) in locations where grid power is unavailable.

The company’s “DC Rapid Chargers” are engineered to communicate with CHAdeMO-equipped EVs and can be programmed to support other battery and automotive systems.

Because CHAdeMO protocols vary by vehicle model, Polar Power’s solution allows multiple protocol variations to be stored in the charger and automatically applied when connected to a specific vehicle. This flexibility ensures compatibility across a wide range of EV models without the need for separate hardware.

These mobile rapid chargers are particularly valuable for roadside assistance providers. Rather than towing a vehicle to the nearest charging facility, tow truck operators can now deliver enough energy to get the motorist back on the road quickly.

Operating within manufacturer-established Level 3 guidelines, Polar’s chargers connect directly to the vehicle’s battery through a dc port, bypassing the onboard ac charger. The battery management system (BMS) inside each EV monitors cell temperature, voltage, and state of charge, ensuring safe and controlled energy delivery.

Beyond roadside use, Polar’s generator–based charging technology supports a wide range of off-grid applications, including EV test tracks, dealership lots, intermodal freight yards, and fleet operations.

By pairing rapid charging with Polar’s dc generator systems, operators gain a portable, flexible solution for environments where utility power is limited or unavailable.
