Pilot project launches zero-emission work trucks in California

By Michelle Froese | February 5, 2025

Voltu Motor recently announced a pilot project to deploy ten Voltu3 electric work trucks as part of the City of Riverside’s Fleet Initiative in California.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) and the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Committee provided $600,000 in grant funding toward the project.

South Coast AQMD’s grant approval follows Voltu’s recent EO certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), allowing the company to commercialize its Class 3 zero-emission trucks across California.

Voltu’s onboard fast charger uses the vehicle’s motor and power electronics to enable charging up to 200 kW from ac three-phase, reducing the need for traditional charging infrastructure. The vehicle also features a high energy density battery pack with immersion cooling technology, providing up to 350 miles of range and dual-motor four-wheel-drive capabilities, comparable to the performance of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

These are the first Class 3 zero-emission work trucks delivered from Voltu’s new manufacturing site in Riverside. Over the next six months, the trucks will be monitored to collect data on performance, charging, and cost efficiency.
