Partnership brings e-axle technology to commercial trucking

By Michelle Froese | February 6, 2025

Range Energy is partnering with global technology supplier ZF to bring the Range eTrailer System within the North American commercial trucking industry.

The collaboration will see ZF’s AxTrax 2 e-axle integrated into Range’s eTrailer System to address fleet demands such as efficiency, emissions reductions, and range extension.

ZF also plans to support Range’s collaboration with component suppliers and trailer and tractor original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Range’s eTrailer System includes a modular battery pack, the ZF AxTrax 2 e-axle, and a smart kingpin equipped with Range’s patented control algorithms. Early tests indicate the system could reduce emissions by up to 70% and lower costs by as much as $20,000 per trailer annually while using existing equipment and infrastructure.

AxTrax 2 is an axle-based, fully integrated system with a compact design that maximizes space for batteries and supports flexible vehicle designs. It synchronizes with key vehicle functions, including braking, ADAS, and automated driving systems to improve safety and efficiency. The system also enables advanced digital and telematics systems via CAN bus to communicate and share e-axle system information.

Initial customer deliveries of Range’s eTrailer System are expected to begin this year, and the company currently has pre-production units deployed in customer pilots across North America.
