Overhead dc fast charging streamlines fleet electrification

By Michelle Froese | August 21, 2026

ChargePoint has deployed an overhead dc fast-charging system at Portland International Airport for electric vehicle (EV) rentals.

The installation is located in the airport’s Quick Turnaround Facility, where rental vehicles are prepared between customers.

Ten dual-port 200-kW dispensers are mounted above the vehicle bays with retractable cable management. The system allows 20 EVs to remain connected, with 10 vehicles charging at a time.

Mounting the charging hardware overhead keeps dispensers and cables out of vehicle circulation areas. The configuration also simplifies conduit and wiring runs by moving the equipment closer to existing overhead electrical infrastructure.

The project was designed around the electrical capacity already available at the facility. Existing circuits were repurposed for the charging installation, reducing the need for additional upstream electrical equipment.

Additional conduit was installed during the project to accommodate future expansion without reopening finished areas. This gives the facility a path to add charging capacity as the rental EV fleet grows.

The charging system uses ChargePoint Express Plus 1000 hardware. Fleet operators can monitor charging remotely and apply programmed charge limits based on time or battery state.

The installation combines high-power charging with overhead cable management to address two common constraints in fleet facilities: limited floor space and exposure of charging equipment to moving vehicles.

ChargePoint says the system is intended to help rental operators return EVs to service more quickly between customer rentals.
