New York is getting one of the largest battery-backed EV charging depots in the US

By Michelle Froese | January 8, 2026

XCharge North America, the North American subsidiary of XCHG Limited, announced a partnership with New York–based energy-efficiency and electrification contractor Energy Plus to develop a large-scale battery-backed electric vehicle (EV) charging site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Scheduled to begin operation in Q2 2026, the project is designed to support high-power EV charging in a dense urban environment with limited grid capacity.

The site will deploy 44 XCharge North America GridLink charging units, providing approximately 9.46 MWh of onsite energy storage and serving 88 parking spaces. The depot will operate under Energy Plus’ Eplug brand and is intended to support both public and fleet EV charging use cases.

By integrating battery storage, the charging site is designed to reduce peak grid demand by drawing electricity during off-peak periods and supplying power during high-demand intervals. This approach supports grid resiliency and helps address constraints associated with increasing EV adoption in urban areas. The system also enables bidirectional energy flow, allowing stored energy to be redistributed locally when needed.

The project aligns with New York City’s broader electrification and energy-resiliency objectives by enabling high-power EV charging without requiring major grid infrastructure upgrades. Battery-backed charging infrastructure of this type is increasingly being evaluated as a way to scale urban EV charging while managing grid congestion and energy costs.

Energy Plus plans to use the Brooklyn deployment as a reference model for similar EV charging installations in other US cities. In addition to serving individual drivers, the Eplug platform is intended to support commercial fleet charging with predictable scheduling, high utilization, and uptime requirements.
