TDK Corporation has announced the release of five new SMD multilayer varistors (MLVs), marking an industry first with a reduced carbon (CO₂) footprint while meeting rigorous automotive qualification standards.
These components are the first in TDK’s expanding X-series, designed for automotive and industrial applications. The initial five parts are AEC-Q200 qualified, indicated by a “1” following the “X” in their part numbers. They’re typically used to protect key automotive systems — such as engine management systems, electronic control units (ECUs), ABS, and ESP — against transient over-voltages caused by events like load dump and jump start.
Providing ESD protection up to 30 kV (IEC 61000-4-2) and compliance with ISO 7637-2/16750-2 automotive pulses, these MLVs ensure reliable performance under demanding conditions.
Available in four EIA package sizes (0603, 0805, 1206, and 1210), the components support maximum RMS operating voltages of 14, 25, and 30 V, with response times to voltage transients ranging from 10 to 500 ps. They manage surge currents from 5 to 400 A for 8/20 µs pulses, while maintaining minimal leakage currents between 1 and 25 µA at the rated DC voltage and room temperature.
Designed for durability, they operate across a wide temperature range of -55° to +150° C without derating, even at elevated temperatures.
The X-series will continue to expand, offering a broad range of overvoltage protection solutions for automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. Simulation models for PSpice are also available to support design and development.
