New Titan rare-earth-free motor for heavy-duty EVs

By Michelle Froese | September 24, 2026

Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) has developed Titan, a new heavy-duty electric motor that expands the company’s HDRM range for commercial vehicle applications.

Titan is the largest and highest-torque motor in the HDRM family and is designed for heavier electric powertrains that require greater torque output. The motor uses AEM’s rare-earth-free architecture, reducing reliance on permanent-magnet materials commonly used in electric traction motors.

The design builds on AEM’s existing HDRM motor platform and is intended for heavy-duty and commercial vehicle applications. First samples are expected in the third quarter of 2027.

AEM is also developing an integrated electric drive system that combines its smaller HDRM150 motor with an air-cooled inverter. The system operates at up to 700 V and delivers more than 30 kW of peak motor output.

The air-cooled architecture eliminates the need for a liquid cooling circuit, removing components such as coolant pumps and associated plumbing. The approach can reduce system complexity and simplify integration in applications where liquid cooling is difficult to package or maintain.

AEM’s HDRM150 motor is also being used in SAF-HOLLAND’s TRAKr e-axle as a generator for regenerative energy recovery.

AEM presented Titan and its electric drive technologies at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany.
