New surface-mount Y1 safety capacitors for EV power electronics

By Michelle Froese | September 19, 2025

Vishay has introduced the industry’s first surface-mount ceramic disc safety capacitors with a Y1 rating (500 Vac / 1500 Vdc).

The SMDY1 Automotive Series is designed for EMI/RFI suppression and filtering in safety-critical, high-voltage circuits used in electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles (see data sheet here).

Target applications include:

  • Onboard chargers (OBCs)
  • Traction inverters
  • Battery management systems (BMS)
  • E-compressors
  • Ac/dc converters

By offering a surface-mount format, these capacitors enable reflow soldering, reduce production costs, and provide a low-profile alternative to through-hole parts, an advantage for compact EV power electronics and flat casings.

The series is AEC-Q200 qualified with PPAP available, features a Class IIB humidity grade, and passes the 85/85/1000h test for durability in harsh environments. Two case sizes are available, with creepage distances of 10 and 14.5 mm.
