New standards drive advances in EV thermal management fluids

By Michelle Froese | October 1, 2025

Prestone will exhibit its EVX collection of electrified vehicle (EV and hybrid) thermal management fluids that meet newly implemented industry standards at The Battery Show North America, October 6th to 9th, 2025, at Huntington Place in Detroit. Visitors will see the company’s latest formulations designed to support OEMs as they address growing demands for electric vehicle (EV) charging time, driving range, safety, and overall performance (Booth 3238).

The fluids provide low conductivity, extended corrosion protection, and chemical stability for light and heavy-duty EVs. Validated through rigorous real-world testing to ensure low current levels in high-voltage applications, the fluids represent the next generation of thermal management for electrified transportation.

Accelerated standards

The EVX fluids were among the first formulated to meet EV coolant specifications now taking effect in China. The GB29743.2 standard, originally scheduled for 2026, will be implemented starting October 1st, 2025. This standard, expected to expand globally in the coming years, is aimed at improving safety in EVs by reducing the electrical conductivity of coolants.

The fluids not only meet GB29743.2 but also ASTM D8566, which addresses low electrical conductivity to minimize risks if coolant comes into contact with batteries. Meeting both standards helps automakers prepare for critical safety and performance requirements.

The portfolio includes several options to address different EV and fuel cell requirements:

  • A phosphate-based organic inhibitor fluid designed to deliver low conductivity and corrosion protection without silicate, borate, or amine.
  • A silicate-based organic inhibitor fluid offering low conductivity, corrosion protection, and enhanced reserve alkalinity for extended service life.
  • A non-ionic inhibitor fluid engineered for fuel cell vehicles, using high-purity corrosion inhibitors to ensure compatibility and reliability in next-generation mobility applications.

Safety testing

To validate performance under real-world conditions, Prestone partnered with Exoes, an electromobility thermal management testing firm, to create a proprietary high-voltage test. In the test, an 800-volt current was passed through fluid coolants.

Conventional coolants combusted in less than one second, while the EVX fluids maintained low current and prevented combustion, reducing the risk of shorting and thermal runaway.

Prestone supplies millions of gallons annually of EV thermal management fluids to vehicle OEMs worldwide. Its manufacturing network spans multiple global facilities, supporting automotive, mining, construction, and agriculture markets with electrification-focused solutions.

At The Battery Show, Prestone experts will present the company’s full offering of EV thermal management technologies, developed to improve safety and performance across temperature ranges and vehicle applications.
