New specification standardizes error codes to improve EV charging reliability

By Michelle Froese | October 25, 2024

CharIN, the global association for charging systems, recently announced the publication of DIN DKE SPEC 99003, titled “Unified Error Codes for a Reliable Electric Vehicle Charging Ecosystem,” which has been published by DIN.

This document, officially released in October 2024, represents a significant leap forward in enhancing the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience.

The DIN DKE SPEC 99003 addresses a critical and long-standing challenge in the current EV charging landscape: the lack of clarity and consistency in error reporting during charging failures. By establishing a comprehensive and unified set of error codes, this specification is set to improve the EV charging process.

The benefits of this approach include:

  • Enhanced user experience through a more transparent and user-friendly charging process, reducing frustration and improving customer satisfaction.
  • Improved operational efficiency for Charge Point Operators (CPOs), enabling more effective service, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Better product quality assurance, providing charging station developers and manufacturers with detailed debugging capabilities and insights for continuous improvement.

The DIN SPEC process, known for its agility and adaptability, facilitated the swift development and publication of this crucial document. In a move to ensure widespread adoption and accessibility, the specification is now available as a complimentary PDF download from DIN Media, allowing all interested parties to benefit from this groundbreaking work.
