New SMD capacitors offer high ripple capability and mechanical stability

By Michelle Froese | December 12, 2025

TDK Corporation has expanded its B409x series of SMD hybrid polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors with a vibration-resistant design, rated up to 30 g (MIL-STD-202, Method 204).

These components target power electronics exposed to mechanical stress, including systems found in electric vehicles (EVs), where dc-dc converters, cooling pumps, steering modules, and brake controllers require stable performance under continuous vibration.

The design uses four posts extending from the base plate to stabilize the can during mechanical shocks and vibration events. Versions with this reinforced structure use the part number suffix 100 (standard versions use suffix 000). Both automotive and industrial environments benefit from this added robustness.

The surface-mount devices are offered in voltage ratings from 25 to 80 V, with capacitances from 56 to 1100 µF. Each measures 10mm in diameter with heights between 10.2 and 16.8mm. The series provides operating temperatures from -55° to +105° C (B40950) and up to +150° C (B40910).

The polymer electrolyte contributes to a low ESR range of 10 mΩ to 33 mΩ and ripple current capabilities between 2.8 and 5.8 A. Useful life exceeds 4000 h at +125° C at rated voltage and ripple current, while the industrial B40950 variant offers more than 10,000 h at +105° C under the same conditions.

Engineers can estimate lifetime under application-specific conditions through TDK’s web-based AlCap Tool, which supports more accurate derating and reliability planning.

Main applications

  • Automotive electronics, such as power steering, dc-dc converters, cooling fans, water and oil pumps, and braking systems
  • Industrial electronics including GPUs, robots, e-bikes, e-scooters, and power tools

Main features

  • Miniaturized SMD format
  • Useful life: 4000 h at +125° C; B40950: 10,000 h at +105° C
  • High ripple current capability
  • Low ESR across the temperature range up to +150° C
  • Standard (suffix 000) and vibration-resistant (suffix 100) designs
  • Vibration resistance up to 30g (reinforced series) or 5g (standard series)
  • Reflow-solderable, RoHS-compatible
