New silicon-anode battery manufacturing facility to support EV and storage markets

By Michelle Froese | October 20, 2025

NEO Battery Materials announced that it has secured an expansion site in South Korea to establish battery cell manufacturing capabilities and scale up silicon battery material production and research operations. The site, located adjacent to NEO’s operational electrode manufacturing facility (“First Facility”), includes six vacant industrial buildings on 2.5 acres with an additional 0.8 acres reserved for future expansion.

The expansion supports NEO’s strategy to develop a Battery Innovation Platform that integrates silicon-anode material development with full battery cell production. The facility will house cylindrical and prismatic-format battery manufacturing equipment with an expected annual capacity of 20 megawatt-hours (MWh).

Together with pouch-format production already available at the First Facility, NEO will be able to produce cells across all three major battery formats used in electric vehicles (EVs), e-mobility, and energy storage systems.

One of the new buildings will be dedicated to expanding silicon battery material output to 20 tons per year. This material will be used both for direct supply and integration into NEO’s electrode manufacturing lines before being assembled into complete battery cells. The site will also support expanded research and development aimed at improving process efficiency and tailoring cell chemistries for mobility and energy applications.

Although NEO’s current production is based in South Korea, the company’s long-term goal is to contribute to the North American battery supply chain by supplying silicon-anode materials and cells to manufacturers seeking to localize next-generation lithium-ion technology. NEO is evaluating potential partnerships and distribution pathways that would align its South Korean operations with growing EV and energy storage manufacturing in Canada and the United States.

Equipment orders have been placed for battery cell assembly, formation, and silicon synthesis. NEO will provide updates following deposit payment, site preparation, and completion of the due diligence process. The company expects to finalize the lease for its operational electrode manufacturing facility in the near term.

NEO Battery Materials plans to develop silicon-enhanced lithium-ion products for a range of sectors, including:

  • High-capacity pouch batteries for drones and electronics
  • High-nickel NMC cylindrical batteries for autonomous systems, robotics, and electric aircraft or eVTOL platforms
  • LFP and high-Ni NMC prismatic batteries for energy storage systems, industrial and commercial mobility such as forklifts, electric boats, and other EV-related applications.

Mr. Seok Joung Youn, Head of Manufacturing and Facility Operations, stated, “By integrating battery material production with cell assembly, we can improve quality control, accelerate product development, and position NEO to participate in the evolving North American and Western battery supply chains.”
