New partnership to advance modular EV battery technology

By Michelle Froese | April 7, 2025

LION E-Mobility AG, a battery pack manufacturer specializing in e-mobility and energy storage, recently announced that its subsidiary, LION Smart GmbH, has entered into a strategic partnership with hofer powertrain Group.

hofer powertrain, an internationally active development and technology partner for efficient drivetrains, will work with LION Smart to accelerate the market launch of next-generation battery systems, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs) and other high-performance e-mobility applications.

The cooperation focuses on small series development and the industrialization of immersion-cooled battery systems, which offer high thermal stability and safety. By combining their respective strengths, LION Smart and hofer powertrain aim to set new benchmarks in the rapid development and deployment of advanced EV battery solutions.

hofer powertrain brings expertise in the development, validation, and swift industrialization of battery systems tailored to automotive requirements. LION Smart complements this with its innovative immersion-cooled battery technology and modular platforms, allowing for flexible scaling from prototype to production.

The collaboration also leverages both companies’ strong industry networks — including OEMs and tier-one suppliers — to ensure faster market access and improved integration across the EV ecosystem.

Customers will benefit from modular, high-performance, and highly secure battery systems that can be integrated into a wide range of vehicle platforms and machinery. LION Smart’s immersion-cooled design delivers enhanced thermal management, safety, and power density, key features for electrified powertrains and high-demand EV applications.
