New LFP battery supports longer lifespan and faster charging for EVs

By Michelle Froese | September 9, 2025

CATL, a global developer of advanced battery technologies, unveiled Shenxing Pro at its Open Day event, the company’s annual showcase where it presents new technologies and strategic direction to partners, investors, and industry stakeholders.

The lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery is engineered to significantly advance electric vehicle (EV) performance through enhanced safety, charging speed, and lifespan.

Shenxing Pro is the first LFP battery capable of sustaining high-voltage output for over an hour following thermal runaway, continuing to power the vehicle while producing no fire or smoke. This feature addresses key EV safety issues, especially relevant to both European and North American markets.

The battery comes in two performance-focused variants:

  • Super Long Life and Long Range: Offers up to 758-km WLTP range and a projected 12-year or 1,000,000 km lifespan, with just 9% degradation after 200,000 km.
  • Super-fast Charging: Delivers 478-km WLTP range in just 10 minutes, with 830-kW output enabling 0–100 km/h acceleration in 2.5 seconds even at 20% state of charge; and maintains strong performance in cold conditions (410 km in 20 minutes at –20° C). Backed by an up to 10-year/240,000-km warranty, this variant brings unprecedented charging resilience.

These variants leverage CATL’s NP 3.0 safety technology, a culmination of seven years of “No Propagation” design, alongside its Wave cell architecture. These allow cooling and fixation from any direction, boosting battery pack stiffness by 25%, doubling vibration durability. Shenxing Pro breaks traditional Cell-to-Body limitations through its cell design, achieving a remarkable 76% pack volume efficiency.

Such enhancements are notable for automakers in both Europe and North America looking to optimize battery pack design, structural resilience, and efficiency. Shenxing Pro’s ability to sustain vehicle power post-thermal runaway is increasingly significant as vehicles move toward Level 3/4 autonomy, where system continuity during emergencies may be critical to passenger safety.

While the battery was introduced to address Europe’s surging EV demand, CATL emphasized its broader relevance, including its global partnerships with over 200 automakers and deployment in more than 20 million EVs. Shenxing Pro is positioned as a next-generation LFP platform ready for adoption globally.
