JBC Technologies has released a new white paper examining passive thermal management strategies for electric vehicle batteries.
The paper outlines how electric vehicle (EV) battery packs generate heat during charging, discharging, and normal operation, and why controlling that heat is critical to battery performance, lifespan, and safety.
Rather than focusing on a single thermal management material, the white paper reviews several passive approaches used in and around EV battery packs. These include thermal isolation, insulation, heat spreading, and shielding.
It also examines specialty materials that can support these functions, including aerogels, ceramic papers, flexible graphite, phase-change materials, gap pads, mica, microcellular polyurethane, polyamide papers, and polypropylene sheets.
The paper also discusses the role of material converters in transforming raw sheets and rolls into die-cut components designed for battery modules and packs.
JBC Technologies says the goal is to help engineers better understand the available material options and the tradeoffs involved in selecting passive thermal management solutions for specific battery designs.
