LMATE has developed halogen-free flame-retardant adhesive materials for fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The materials are intended to address thermal management and fire protection requirements as charging rates and battery power levels increase.
The materials include a heat-resistant battery tape for securing and packaging cells and resin coatings for battery pack bottom and sidewalls.
The adhesive uses a reactive design that chemically incorporates flame-retardant functionality into the resin rather than relying solely on additive-based formulations.
According to LMATE, the approach is intended to reduce migration, or bleeding, of flame-retardant components that can affect adhesion over time. The materials use halogen-free formulations and are designed to maintain adhesion under elevated temperatures.
LMATE has evaluated the materials for 180-degree peel strength and heat resistance. A specified tape specimen achieved a UL 94 VTM-0 flame-retardant classification. Performance and compliance will depend on the substrate, material thickness, operating environment, and test conditions.
The company is also evaluating insulation and dielectric performance under electrical-field and electromagnetic-interference conditions relevant to battery cell, module, and pack designs.
LMATE will present the materials at the Hong Kong Consumer Electronics Show from October 13 to 16.
