New fans address thermal management in EV chargers

By Michelle Froese | May 15, 2025

RS Group, a global provider of product and service solutions for industrial customers, is offering an expanded portfolio of ebm-papst fans designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce heat in high-demand electronic systems. This includes two new series of fans optimized for thermal management challenges in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

In the US, the number of public electric vehicle (EV) charging ports increased by 11% between 2023 and 2024, while cumulative lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity rose by 64% over the same period. These systems operate at high power levels, generating substantial heat that must be effectively managed to maintain performance and reliability.

Thermal management technologies, such as axial and backward-curved impeller fans, are commonly used in these applications. A typical dc fast charger can contain up to 25 fans to regulate internal temperatures and protect sensitive electronic components.

To address these demands, ebm-papst has introduced two fan series: the AxiForce and W3G300–ME46. Both are designed to meet the performance requirements of modern EV charging stations and renewable energy platforms.

The AxiForce series includes compact axial fans available in 80, 120, and 172 mm sizes. These models feature aerodynamic housing and fan blade designs that reduce acoustic noise and energy consumption while supporting high back-pressure environments. Rated up to IP68, they offer environmental durability for a variety of electronic systems, including EV chargers and industrial control cabinets.

The larger W3G300–ME46 fans, with a 300 mm diameter, are tailored for outdoor applications such as high-power EV chargers and BESS. These electronically commutated (EC) fans combine ac and dc voltages to achieve high power density without the need for direct grid connection.

Built to meet ISO16750 automotive standards, they are tested for environmental durability including moisture, sunlight, and ice exposure, ensuring reliable performance in harsh outdoor settings.

Both fan series contribute to the operational stability of systems used in EV and renewable energy infrastructure, helping to mitigate heat-related failures and extend component lifespan.
