New encapsulant supports 800-V EV batteries and inverter reliability

By Michelle Froese | September 5, 2025

Dow has introduced DOWSIL EG-4175 Silicone Gel, a protective material designed for next-generation insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules operating at higher voltages. These devices are increasingly used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and inverters, as well as in renewable applications.

The new silicone gel withstands operating temperatures up to 180°C and provides electrical insulation, vibration absorption, and stress relief. It features self-priming adhesion for module protection and cures at room temperature, with the option for heat-accelerated curing to reduce cycle times.

The gel also possesses self-healing properties, allowing it to repair small cracks.

The transition from 400 to 800-V EV battery systems is driving higher power densities and greater thermal demands on inverter components. Similarly, PV panels and wind turbines are handling higher electrical loads, requiring encapsulants with stronger dielectric properties and thermal resistance.

DOWSIL EG-4175 Silicone Gel is designed to address these needs, offering low levels of silicone oil bleed and adhesion without a primer.

In addition to EG-4175 Silicone Gel, Dow’s portfolio includes DOWSIL EA-7158 Adhesive, a one-part silicone adhesive formulated for IGBT module assembly. Both products are available globally for power electronics manufacturers.
