Mitigating thermal runaway for electric vehicles

By Michelle Froese | August 28, 2024

Regardless of the cell chemistry or pack architecture, lithium-ion batteries are at risk of experiencing a thermal runaway event. An effective cell-to-cell (C2C) barrier is the first line of defense to combat thermal propagation.

Aspen Aerogel’s PyroThin cell-to-cell barriers are specifically designed to help battery engineers achieve safety and performance goals for modules and packs with LFP and solid-state chemistries.

PyroThin is a high-quality cell-to-cell barrier because it provides thermal and mechanical protection over a vehicle’s entire lifecycle in an ultra-thin, lightweight format. Aspen’s unique aerogel technology enables PyroThin to act as both a compression pad and a fire barrier. These cell-to-cell barriers are a top choice for battery engineers because of PyroThin’s unrivaled thermal and mechanical performance throughout the pack’s lifecycle.

PyroThin can also be customized to meet thermal, compression response, and thickness requirements. Each PyroThin part combines Aspen’s patent-protected Aerogel Technology Platform, which includes a comprehensive understanding of complex thermal runaway events in EVs.
