Michigan backs EV charging and emerging mobility projects

By Michelle Froese | September 15, 2026

Michigan has awarded $1.5 million through the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform to ten projects focused on mobility and clean energy technologies.

Among the projects, OpenRoad Technologies received $135,000 through the Test Site Grant program to validate a scalable, battery buffered Level 3 charging system at the Kettering Mobility Research Center.

The system is intended to support dc fast charging at sites where available electrical capacity is limited.

Battery buffered charging uses onsite energy storage to supplement available grid power during charging. This can help support higher power dc charging at locations where the existing electrical service cannot provide the full charging load.

The latest funding round includes Real World Deployment Grants and Test Site Grants intended to help companies validate technologies in real world operating environments and move projects toward commercialization.

A few other projects selected in this round include:

  • Retrospect Autonomous Systems: Received $150,000 to test real time safety monitoring software for autonomous vehicle validation and fleet management at the American Center for Mobility.
  • Detroit Hydrogen Exchange: Received $250,000 to convert and deploy a hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 refuse truck under municipal operating conditions in Detroit.
  • Neology: Received $250,000 to launch a mobility grade hydrogen production and refueling site in Detroit for medium and heavy duty vehicles.
  • Kodiak Technologies: Received $180,000 to pilot a plug in hybrid diesel electric heavy duty snow blower at Michigan Tech and the American Center for Mobility.
  • AmHyTech: Received $115,000 to validate a modular ammonia to hydrogen refueling system at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab.

The Michigan Mobility Funding Platform is operated by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Michigan Department of Transportation.
