Lithium-ion battery program launched for drone applications

NEO Battery Materials, a developer of low-cost silicon battery materials designed to enable rapid-charging lithium-ion batteries, announced the initiation of a new development program focused on high-performance batteries for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The program will utilize NEO’s proprietary silicon anode materials, NBMSiDE P-200 and P-300N, to address key limitations in current drone battery technology, including flight time, payload capacity, and mission endurance.

The company aims to develop pouch-type lithium-ion cells optimized for both short-duration, high-capacity tactical drones and long-range, heavy-duty UAVs.

Two battery solutions are under development: one incorporating the P-200 series for single-use or tactical defense applications, and another based on the P-300N series for logistics, surveillance, and agricultural drones that require extended cycle life and operational range.

With respective capacities of 2,500 mAh/g (P-200) and 2,000 mAh/g (P-300N), both chemistries are expected to exceed conventional drone battery performance benchmarks while maintaining cost efficiency.

The initiative builds on NEO’s recent technical advancements, patent portfolio, and expanded engineering expertise in cell manufacturing. The Company plans to first target Korean drone manufacturers and pursue partnerships with US firms to access funding opportunities from the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.

“The increase in defense spending and demand for advanced unmanned systems is driving the need for higher-performance batteries,” said Spencer Huh, president and CEO of NEO. “Our silicon-enhanced batteries are designed to align with these requirements while also providing a domestically sourced alternative to Chinese supply chains for critical drone applications.”
