LG Energy Solution to acquire full ownership of Ontario EV battery plant

By Michelle Froese | February 17, 2026

LG Energy Solution will acquire full ownership of NextStar Energy, purchasing Stellantis’ 49% equity stake in the joint venture. NextStar Energy was established in 2022 to build Canada’s first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) battery cell manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario.

The facility represents a significant component of North America’s EV battery supply chain, supporting localized lithium-ion cell production for electric vehicle programs. Stellantis will remain a customer of the site and continue sourcing battery products.

More than $5 billion CAD has been invested in the Windsor facility, which currently employs over 1,300 workers and is expected to scale toward 2,500 employees at full production capacity.

The plant is positioned to support both automotive battery demand and, under the new ownership structure, potential expansion into energy storage system (ESS) markets.

For EV manufacturers, localized battery production reduces exposure to global supply volatility, shortens logistics chains, and supports alignment between cell design, vehicle integration, and manufacturing scale-up. Battery manufacturing capacity remains a critical factor in EV production planning, vehicle cost control, and long-term electrification strategy.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.
