Contributing to a zero-carbon global shipping industry

By Michelle Froese | December 15, 2023

CATL released the first comprehensive energy replenishment solution that includes both battery charging and swapping with zero-carbon emissions.

CATL, a global provider of new-energy innovative technologies, recently released the industry’s first full-lifecycle collaborative operation cloud platform for new-energy vessels. The company has also released the first comprehensive energy replenishment solution — which includes battery charging and swapping with zero-carbon emission — to contribute to the zero-carbon transition of global shipping.

The full-lifecycle collaborative operation cloud platform for new-energy vessels was developed independently by CATL, and is the first cloud ecosystem platform in the electric vessel industry. Relying on the company’s battery-related big data and AI decision-making ability, this platform provides cloud-edge-end collaborative safety warning for electric vessel batteries. It also enables intelligent recommendations and real-time processing of vessel battery charging and swapping.

Featuring the advantages of one-stop service, digital intelligence and high scalability, it can meet the digital needs of various marine application scenarios.

The first comprehensive energy replenishment solution of battery charging and swapping with zero-carbon emission consists of three major products:

  • The containerized mobile power
  • The high-voltage high-power battery charging system
  • The cloud platform.

In the “vessel and battery separation” mode, this solution recognizes the shared, smart application of containerized mobile power and ensures electric vessels are fully charged. The aim is to solve range anxiety while improving the utilization rate, operational efficiency, and economy of electric vessels.

CATL officially entered the ship electrification field in 2017 and became the first EV battery enterprise recognized and tested by the China Classification Society (CCS) in accordance with the latest Guidelines for the Test of Battery Electric Ships . At present, more than 500 new energy vessels equipped with CATL battery have been put into service around the world.
