ISO 15118 platform expands secure Plug & Charge access

By Michelle Froese | August 7, 2026

Emobi and OmniTrust have partnered to support secure Plug & Charge deployment across electric vehicle (EV) charging networks.

The collaboration combines OmniTrust’s cryptographic trust technology with Emobi’s JustPlug platform, a cloud-based Plug & Charge system built around the ISO 15118 standard. The platform is designed to support both newer and legacy charging hardware.

Plug & Charge allows an electric vehicle to authenticate itself and begin a charging session without requiring a separate card or mobile app. Emobi’s system assigns each vehicle a digital identity using Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and digital certificates, allowing charging sessions to be authenticated and encrypted.

The partnership is intended to create a common security layer for communication and data exchange among vehicles, chargers, and charging networks. This could help automakers, fleets, mobility providers, and network operators provide Plug & Charge services without developing separate authentication systems for each platform.

Emobi says JustPlug can extend Plug & Charge functionality to approximately 80% of chargers and vehicles that cannot support conventional implementations without software, firmware, or hardware upgrades.

The companies are also positioning the system for connected energy applications, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. The platform combines encrypted communications, monitoring, and certificate lifecycle management to help protect charging systems against unauthorized access and identity misuse.
