High-power silicon carbide technology ideal for EV powertrains

By Michelle Froese | January 23, 2025

Wolfspeed, Inc., a global provider of silicon carbide technology, has unveiled its Gen 4 silicon carbide technology platform, which aims to enhance high-power system efficiency and durability while simplifying design challenges.

This platform supports EV powertrains and battery energy storage applications by offering improved switching behaviors and streamlined development.

Silicon carbide technology is vital for high-power applications, enabling better performance and lower costs than traditional silicon. The Gen 4 platform is available in 750, 1200, and 2300-V classes, supporting designers in optimizing EV systems for efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

The technology addresses the increasing demand for high-voltage, energy-efficient systems, providing benefits such as reduced on-resistance, lower switching losses, and extended system lifespans, even in challenging environments.

Wolfspeed is currently the only silicon carbide producer with silicon carbide material and silicon carbide device fabrication facilities based in the United States. This factor is becoming increasingly important under the new US Administration’s increased focus on national security and investment in American semiconductor production.

Wolfspeed’s Gen 4 platform was designed to comprehensively improve system efficiency and prolong application life, even in harshest of environments, while helping to reduce system cost and development time.

Benefits include:

  • Holistic system efficiency: Delivering up to a 21% reduction in on-resistance at operating temperatures with up to 15% lower switching losses.
  • Durability: Ensuring reliable performance, including a short-circuit withstand time of up to 2.3 µS to provide additional safety margin.
  • Lower system cost: Streamlining design processes to reduce system costs and development time.

The platform is positioned to advance innovation in EVs and other critical sectors.
