High-energy lithium-ion battery reaches 450 Wh/kg with scalable design

By Michelle Froese | May 2, 2025

Amprius Technologies, a developer of advanced lithium-ion batteries using silicon-anode technology, has launched its 450-Wh/kg SiCore lithium-ion battery. This represents the company’s most energy-dense SiCore cell, offering 450 Wh/kg and 950 Wh/L.

The battery is expected to move to mass production in the near term through global manufacturing partners. Its high energy density makes it especially relevant for electric vehicles (EVs), where lightweight and compact battery systems directly contribute to extended range and performance.

The SiCore cell is built using Amprius’ proprietary silicon anode material system and is designed to deliver up to 80% more energy than conventional lithium-ion batteries that rely on graphite anodes. This improvement in gravimetric and volumetric energy density supports applications that demand longer run times, increased payload capacity, or reduced battery footprint.

Amprius previously demonstrated this level of performance through its SiMaxx platform. The SiCore platform now brings similar energy density into a more scalable cell design.

The format and chemistry of the SiCore cell are compatible with existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes and equipment, allowing for broader adoption without the need for significant infrastructure changes.

The company continues to work with global partners to scale production and meet demand across various sectors, including for EVs, aviation, and industrial systems.
