Helium-based leak testing solutions for EV battery cells and components

Leak testing is crucial in producing next-generation lithium-ion batteries, particularly for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Ensuring secure sealing of the cell housing is essential to prevent electrolyte leakage, as even small amounts can react with ambient humidity to form toxic compounds.

Additionally, protecting against moisture or contaminant ingress is vital for maintaining the cell’s performance and longevity. This testing is essential in the EV industry, where high quality and safety standards are mandatory.

Marposs is meeting these challenges with its leak detection systems that use helium, a light, reliable, inert, non-toxic, and non-flammable gas — making them ideal for precise leak testing. Due to its low presence in the atmosphere, helium can be detected accurately when it escapes from leaks in a component under test, using a mass spectrometer to ensure high-quality results.

These systems are designed to identify even the smallest leaks, ensuring product leaks stay well below specified reject thresholds to avoid environmental contamination and prevent performance degradation over the product’s lifetime.

The company has developed a specialized leak detection system to test the die-cast jacket of an EV engine and a newer system to test fuel cell flow plates for EV components. Both systems involve extensive research to design and customize the testing equipment to meet the unique requirements of these components.

Marposs can provide a wide range of standard products and customized applications, either manual or fully automated, for the leak testing of the EV components in the complete manufacturing chain.
