Four power electronics companies honored in 2023 LEAP Awards

By Michelle Froese | October 23, 2023

Each year, the LEAP Awards recognizes exceptional innovation that moves worldwide industries forward. LEAP stands for Leadership in Engineering Achievement Program, and this year’s expert judging panel selected the best of the best across multiple categories, including power electronics.

The power electronics category covers power supplies, transistors, and any other power electronic circuits, components, or assemblies used in power electronics, including battery and battery management.

The 2023 LEAP Award winners in this category are:

1. GOLD
Onsemi
— M3S EliteSiC devices

The latest onsemi portfolio includes EliteSiC MOSFETs and modules that facilitate higher switching speeds, specifically supporting the growing number of 800 V electric vehicle (EV

The judges commented: “A timely new product that fills an emerging and current need with smart improvements in operation from less energy required for gate switching to lowered cooling requirements which is often at odds with high-powered switching applications.”

2. SILVER
Microchip Technology — HPD

Hybrid Power Drive Module (HPD) modules are highly integrated power semiconductor devices that reduce the number of components and simplify the overall system design. These configurable power devices include a three-bridge topology that is available in Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Silicon (Si) semiconductor technologies.

The HPD module is a cost-effective unit that integrates a power bridge and a driver stage. You can use HPD modules in power conversion applications for electric motor drives on aircraft flight-critical actuator systems.

3. BRONZE
Power Integrations
— 1SP0635V2A0D gate driver

The 1SP0635V2A0D SCALE-2 Plug-and-Play gate driver is a compact single channel intelligent gate driver designed to support a range of IGBT modules. It features a versatile fiber-optic interface. Power Integrations’ Dynamic Advanced Active Clamping allows an extended DC-link voltage range to support the IGBT off-state for up to 60 seconds.

This advanced gate driver works with an isolated DC-DC converter ISO6125R-33, which needs to be purchased separately as it is not integrated into the driver.

4. HONORABLE MENTION
Texas Instruments
— BQ79718-Q1

TI’s BQ79718-Q1 is a Automotive 18-s precise battery-cell monitor, balancer, and integrated protector compliant to ASIL-D. There’s also a battery pack monitor for battery management systems.
