Gireve, Hubject, and Irdeto, three key players in the e-mobility space, have announced a collaboration aimed at expanding Plug & Charge interoperability and accessibility worldwide. The goal is to streamline electric vehicle (EV) charging across global markets by making it easier for charge point operators, vehicle manufacturers, and software providers to work across different networks and systems.
Expanding access to seamless charging
Plug & Charge, based on the ISO 15118 standard, enables EVs to authenticate and initiate charging automatically, eliminating the need for apps, cards, or manual intervention. As adoption of this standard grows, particularly in Europe and North America, interoperability between different ecosystem operators becomes critical.
Through this partnership, Gireve, Hubject, and Irdeto will grant mutual access to their Plug & Charge networks via existing APIs. This integration supports approximately four million Plug & Charge-capable EVs globally.
The agreement aims to reduce the complexity for charge point operators (CPOs), eMobility service providers (EMPs), and automakers by eliminating vendor lock-in and enabling cross-platform compatibility.
The agreement addresses technical, security, and operational challenges to help standardize how Plug & Charge services are delivered. It also aligns with regulatory shifts in certain regions where Plug & Charge functionality is becoming a legal requirement rather than a market option.
Why it matters
-
Improved driver access: EV drivers can use more Plug & Charge-enabled stations across regions, without switching platforms or reconfiguring settings.
-
Simplified operations: CPOs and EMPs can expand their networks without duplicating integration efforts or managing separate systems.
-
Market readiness: The collaboration helps reduce one of the final obstacles to widespread Plug & Charge adoption, accelerating global EV deployment.
The partnership will first leverage existing technical infrastructure to enable immediate access across networks. This means participating companies and customers can begin benefiting from expanded interoperability without waiting for new system builds.
Following this initial phase, the three companies plan to align on additional technical requirements and long-term frameworks to support future scaling. All partners are active participants in ongoing Plug & Charge protocol development, including work on the OPNC standard, which supports openness and interoperability across the EV ecosystem.
The future of EV charging
As EV adoption moves from early growth to mainstream implementation, industry alignment on customer experience, interoperability, and open architecture becomes essential. The Gireve–Hubject–Irdeto partnership reflects this shift—demonstrating how collaborative models can offer a path forward that prioritizes reliability, efficiency, and global scalability.
This agreement provides a tangible example of how industry cooperation can address current market gaps while laying the groundwork for an integrated, user-centric future in e-mobility.
