ABB has signed an agreement to acquire BrightLoop, a French developer of advanced power electronics, to strengthen its position in high-performance power conversion technologies. The acquisition supports ABB’s electrification strategy across industrial vehicles, marine propulsion, and low-voltage mobility platforms, including electric construction equipment, mining vehicles, ferries, and off-highway EVs.
BrightLoop specializes in compact, efficient dc/dc converters capable of handling bidirectional power flows across a range of voltage levels. These converters are designed for environments where reliability, space, and weight are critical, which are essential considerations in EV architecture.
The company’s experience spans various sectors, including motorsports, aerospace, marine, hydrogen mobility, and defense, with a growing presence in electrified transportation.
The company’s portfolio leverages silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technologies, helping to reduce energy losses and improve power density. These are important attributes for next-generation electric drivetrains and energy storage systems. Its products are already in use in harsh environments, making them a good fit for applications where conventional components may struggle to meet thermal or durability requirements.
BrightLoop employs approximately 90 people and generated €16 million in revenue in 2024. ABB will initially acquire a 93% controlling interest, with plans to acquire the remaining 7% by 2028. The transaction is expected to close in Q3 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.
BrightLoop will continue to operate from its base in France, where ABB plans to retain its engineering and manufacturing footprint. The integration of BrightLoop’s technology is expected to accelerate ABB’s roadmap for delivering scalable, intelligent, and efficient electrification solutions to OEMs across the EV and industrial mobility sectors.
