Energy management system simplifies residential EV charging

By Michelle Froese | September 12, 2025

ABB Installation Products has launched the Microlectric EM Series Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS), designed to address one of the most significant challenges in home EV charging: limited electrical capacity.

The system manages energy distribution in real time, enabling safe and efficient charging without requiring costly electrical panel upgrades.

As EV adoption increases, residential electrical systems are under greater demand. The EM Series continuously monitors available capacity and automatically adjusts charging activity to prevent overloads.

This intelligent load management approach ensures EVs charge only when sufficient capacity is available, protecting household systems and improving charging reliability.

Engineered using patented designs and technology from Black Box Innovations, the EM Series provides a scalable platform that supports a range of residential and multi-residential applications. Beyond EV charging, the system can also manage other non-essential loads, such as air conditioning, helping homeowners and building managers balance demand during peak periods and reduce load calculation issues associated with high-current devices.

The EM Series integrates with service entrances from 60 to 200 Amps and is compatible with existing residential infrastructure. By optimizing power distribution, the system helps maintain charging performance while reducing the need for electrical service upgrades.
