Dürr equips Volvo’s new EV plant with automated final assembly systems

By Michelle Froese | September 3, 2026

Dürr is supplying automated final assembly technology for Volvo Cars’ new all-electric vehicle (EV) plant in Košice, Slovakia, where production is scheduled to begin in 2027.

The facility will have a maximum annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles and will use Dürr systems across final assembly, including conveyor, fluid filling, and end-of-line testing equipment.

For EV production, the filling systems are designed to accommodate new low-conductivity coolants and advanced air-conditioning refrigerants. These fluids are becoming increasingly important as EV thermal-management systems evolve and European refrigerant requirements change.

The plant will also use Dürr’s end-of-line systems for chassis measurement and adjustment. The x-wheel system uses a non-contact sensor to measure vehicle geometry across different tire and body configurations, while the resulting driving-axis data is used for headlamp alignment.

A camera-based headlamp measurement system will inspect and adjust low beam, high beam, and fog lamp output in accordance with ECE and SAE requirements. Compliance with both standards gives the system applicability to vehicles built for European and North American lighting requirements.

Dürr is also supplying the complete conveyor system connecting the plant’s final assembly processes. More than 3 km of conveyor equipment will move vehicle bodies and doors through the production line using electric monorail systems, skillet platforms, and modular chain conveyors.

The Košice facility will expand Volvo Cars’ European EV production capacity when vehicle manufacturing begins in 2027.
