Dump truck features on-demand hydraulics

By kkorane | May 25, 2023

The DT6 articulated dump truck from Hydrema, based in Støvring, Denmark, marks the company’s first foray into the electric vehicle segment. The completely new design, showcased at Conexpo 2023, combines an electric direct drive with on-demand hydraulics. Among the key features: quiet operation and zero emissions.

The DT6 articulated dump truck features an electric direct drive and efficient on-demand hydraulics.

The machine has an articulated chassis with a center pivot point, along with two double-acting hydraulic stabilizers that ensure firm and steady motion control when driving and tipping. The 3.5 cubic meter (4.6 cu. yard) high-tensile steel dump body has a carrying capacity of 5,500 kg (12,100 lb). Tipping angle of the bottom of the body in relation to horizontal is 45°.

High performance requirements for the DT6 have resulted in a new purpose-built electric platform offering maximum efficiency with minimal losses and an exceptionally low noise level, according to the company. The system is based on a liquid-cooled 96 V ZF eTrac motor, transmission and axles. Power ratings are 29 kW continuous and 69 kW peak. Three different drive modes, Power, Normal and Eco, let the operator adjust for different loads, accelerations and energy recovery situations.

Enhancing system efficiency is on-demand hydraulics. A separate electric drive powering an ultralow-noise hydraulic pump supplies tipping and other auxiliary functions. The pump only runs when necessary to minimize losses. Hydraulic power is 14 kW.

Another electric motor drives the hydrostatic load-sensing articulated steering, which includes two double-acting cylinders with damping, priority valves, and integrated emergency steering. Maximum steering angle is ±38°.

Among other electrohydraulic features is the 180° MultiTip. This compact body-swivel system, driven by two double-acting cylinders, lets the operator dump the load continuously over a 180° slew range. The robust system is mounted on a large slew bearing, and tipping function is via the cylinders, ensuring that the body is pulled down regardless of the machine’s inclination. Tipping time is 10 sec up and 7 sec down.

Liquid-cooled 63 kWh lithium ion batteries are designed for maximum efficiency and power. An integral Thermal Management System helps ensure optimum battery conditions and battery life, with expected battery lifetime of 8 to 10 years.

The Hydrema DT6 comes with a powerful 18 kW integrated onboard charger. It can connect directly to standard Type 2 charging stations or CCE 32A outlets. Under normal working conditions (8 hours), the DT6 only needs to charge during work breaks to ensure maximum uptime throughout the day.
